The Paleochristian Basilica of Coracho, in Lucena, now has a permanent mosaic exhibition created collectively during this summer. Those who visit the archaeological site will be able to view the ensemble, which will remain permanently installed.

A project with 40 participants

The Lucena City Council promoted the initiative, which turned the site into a space for creation and learning over eight weeks. Forty people took part, thirty adults and ten children, who worked on making the pieces, drawing inspiration from the history and meaning of the basilica itself.

Seven panels and a children's piece

The final result consists of seven large-format panels and an eighth piece made by the participating children, which was added to the project as a contribution that emerged during the creative process itself. In total, around twelve thousand pieces of ceramic, stone, marble, glass and other materials have been used, placed by hand to build a visual narrative about different elements linked to the Basilica of Coracho. The initiative combined artistic training, knowledge of the heritage and citizen participation, with the aim of bringing this archaeological space closer to the public in a different way.

Presentation and acknowledgements

The presentation of the results was attended by the mayor of Lucena, Aurelio Fernández, the councillor for Historical-Artistic Heritage, Charo Valverde, and Rocío Florido, head of Estudio Musivaria and promoter of the project. Aurelio Fernández thanked Estudio Musivaria for its work and the participants for their involvement. According to the mayor, the intention is for the Basilica of Coracho to continue incorporating activities linked to culture, art and citizen participation. The event concluded with the presentation of participation certificates to those who took part in the project and with the presentation of the mosaic ensemble, which can now be visited permanently at the site.
