The Casa Mudéjar of Córdoba declared a Bien de Interés Cultural
The Consejo de Ministros approved on Tuesday, September 15, the declaration of the Casa Mudéjar as a Bien de Interés Cultural (BIC) in the category of Monument, which grants the building the highest level of heritage protection, as highlighted by the secretary general of the PSOE de Córdoba, Rafi Crespín.

The Council of Ministers approved on Tuesday, September 15, at the proposal of the Minister of Culture, Ernest Urtasun, the declaration of the Casa Mudéjar of Córdoba as a Site of Cultural Interest (BIC), in the category of Monument. The processing of the file had begun in May 2026. The declaration implies the highest level of legal protection provided for under state historical heritage legislation, as reported by the PSOE of Córdoba.
With this addition, the Casa Mudéjar becomes part of the list of more than fifty Sites of Cultural Interest in the Córdoba capital, which includes, among others, the Mezquita-Catedral, the Alcázar de los Reyes Cristianos, the Sinagoga, the Puente Romano, the Torre de la Calahorra, the Puerta del Puente, the Palacio de Viana, the Plaza de la Corredera, the Capilla de San Bartolomé, the Baños Árabes and the Museo Arqueológico, in addition to numerous Fernandine churches.
The building, located in the historic quarter next to the Mezquita-Catedral, has its origin in the union of five medieval houses and is organized around four courtyards and a tower, with galleries and spaces that reflect the evolution of Córdoban domestic architecture. It preserves elements such as polylobed arches, capitals of caliphal tradition, polychrome wooden alfarjes and plasterwork with ataurique motifs, lacería, and inscriptions in Arabic calligraphy.
Among the elements that justify the protection are the fifteenth-century figurative mural paintings preserved in the Sala de Embajadores, discovered in 1928 by the archaeologist Samuel de los Santos Gener. The ensemble depicts theological and cardinal virtues alongside heraldic motifs and constitutes, according to the note, one of the few preserved examples of this type of mural painting in Córdoba.
The Casa Mudéjar currently maintains a cultural use as the headquarters of Casa Árabe. The general secretary of the PSOE of Córdoba, Rafi Crespín, stated that this use shows that preserving heritage does not mean turning it into something static. «The Casa Mudéjar brings together past and present: it preserves centuries of history and, at the same time, is today a space dedicated to culture, knowledge and dialogue,» she said.
Crespín placed this declaration within the set of heritage recognitions of Córdoba, whose Centro Histórico is inscribed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, as are Medina Azahara, the Mezquita-Catedral and the Fiesta de los Patios, together with the more than fifty BICs of the city among monuments, buildings, churches, convents and historic ensembles and archaeological sites.
