The history and heritage of the Roma people come to the Archivo Histórico Provincial de Córdoba with the exhibition «Una Mirada Diferente a través de la historia gitana», organized by the Asociación Dosta. The show opens this Friday, November 6, and can be visited until December 5, Monday to Saturday, from 10:00 to 14:00, with entrance on calle Pompeyos, 6. The tour brings together documents, images, explanatory panels and historical pieces about episodes such as the Gran Redada of 1749, one of the most significant in the persecution of the Roma people in Spain. It also addresses their cultural, social and artistic contributions, with attention to the role of Roma women in the transmission of traditions.

Forty years of research

The curator of the exhibition and owner of the pieces, Manuel Martínez, explains that the collection was born forty years ago, when he began to research the history of the Roma people based on his experience with Roma students from the Los Almendros neighborhood. The show has been traveling since 2017 and has passed through various Spanish cities. Martínez argues that this heritage should have a permanent space: «All of this is aimed at achieving a museum of the Roma people». The president of the Asociación Dosta, Vanesa Jiménez, points out that the goal is «to break those prejudices and those stereotypes» that still affect the Roma community and to bring its history closer to younger generations.

Visits for schools

The exhibition includes a program of visits aimed at primary schools and secondary schools. The activities consist of a guided tour, participatory workshops and a space for questions, with an approximate duration of fifty minutes. Visits are free, for groups of up to thirty students, and take place between 10:00 and 14:00, with capacity for four groups per day. Interested schools must book through the registration form provided by the organization. The presentation included the participation of the delegate of Culture, Historical Heritage and Sports, Eduardo Lucena; the president of the Asociación Dosta, Vanesa Jiménez; the lawyer and Roma reference Marcos Santiago Cortés; and the curator of the show, Manuel Martínez.
