The 100% Iberian Acorn-fed Ham Fair of the Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) Los Pedroches aims to be declared a Festival of Tourist Interest in Andalusia. The Córdoba Provincial Council has joined the request, promoted by the Villanueva de Córdoba City Council together with the PDO, as reported by the provincial institution. The backing comes in the midst of the celebration of the XXVI edition of the fair, which is being held these days in Villanueva de Córdoba. That 26-year history is what makes it possible to meet the seniority requirement demanded by the declaration. The president of the Provincial Council, Salvador Fuentes, has stated that the declaration would mean "recognition of a consolidated trajectory" and an opportunity to broaden the promotion of the fair and of the entire region. Fuentes has stressed that the proposal is "very well justified" and has advocated aligning the City Council, the Provincial Council and the Junta de Andalucía around it.

An event that looks to gastronomic tourism

The mayor of Villanueva de Córdoba, Isaac Reyes, has explained that in this edition "new steps have been taken to keep growing", such as the twinning with the Aracena Ham Fair, the alliance with Cambados and albariño and joining the Network of Gastronomic Municipalities of Spain. The goal, he has stated, is to make the municipality and the region a benchmark for gastronomic tourism throughout the year, beyond the fair. The program for this edition includes the Contest for the Best 100% Iberian Acorn-fed Ham PDO Los Pedroches, with recognition for the livestock farmer and the farm of origin of the pig of the winning ham. This Friday the Regional Contest for the Best Cutter is held and on Sunday, November 8 the XXVI National Contest for the Best Cutter will take place. The event is completed with technical sessions, seminars, business exhibitors, the Iberian Pig Market Price Board, tasting areas, artisans, local tourism companies and guided visits. According to Fuentes, the province has some 2,000 Iberian pig farms and more than 360,000 hectares of holm oak groves. In 2025, the PDO certified nearly 70,000 hams and shoulders.
