Villanueva del Rey revives the wine trasiega on the 7th and 8th

The municipality celebrates its XII Fiesta de la Trasiega with grape harvesters' parades, a demonstration of the trade and a wine of pitarra competition.

Villanueva del Rey celebrates the twelfth edition of its Fiesta de la Trasiega on November 7 and 8, two days dedicated to pitarra wine and to a practice that sustained the municipality's economy for centuries. The programme starts on Saturday 7 with a parade of local grape harvesters, followed by a trasiega demonstration and a local pitarra wine competition. The day is completed with activities for the youngest and live music. Sunday 8 will host the II Concurso Comarcal de Sevillanas, along with the continuation of children's activities and musical performances. The festival recalls an activity that, according to the Culture delegate of the Diputación de Córdoba, Gabriel Duque, took place from the 12th century until the mid-20th century and was "a social pillar for this town, as well as a way of life and an important source of wealth." Duque has noted that the event seeks to spread knowledge of the pitarra wine-making process, promote local gastronomy and generate activity in the companies of the Guadiato area. The mayor, Francisco Javier Murillo, has indicated that the celebration serves to "keep our traditions alive" and to pass them on to new generations, and has stressed that the programme is prepared with both the neighbourhood and those who return to the town on those days and those who come to discover it in mind. The Culture councillor, Bárbara Rico, was in charge of detailing the programme of this edition, which combines the most traditional part with music and family activities. The Diputación de Córdoba joins the organisation of this event, presented together with the Town Council of the town.
