Cordoba students clean Benajarafe beach against marine litter
More than 50 students from IES Zoco in Córdoba and IES La Soledad in Villafranca take part in the #EUBeachCleanup campaign, promoted by Europe Direct Córdoba and Europe Direct Málaga.
More than 50 students from IES Zoco in Córdoba and IES La Soledad in Villafranca have taken part in a clean-up day at Benajarafe beach, in the municipality of Vélez-Málaga. The activity, organised by Europe Direct Córdoba, attached to the Delegation of Youth of the Diputación, in collaboration with Europe Direct Málaga, included an informative talk before the waste collection.
A campaign that collects tonnes of waste
The initiative is part of the #EUBeachCleanup campaign, which consists of clean-up events organised by institutions, NGOs and citizens. According to its promoters, these events make it possible to collect tonnes of waste on beaches, rivers and lakes around the world. The campaign is driven by the European Union, through the Directorate-General for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries and the European External Action Service, together with the United Nations.
The problem of marine litter
Every year millions of tonnes of rubbish end up in the ocean. According to the data handled by the organisation, it is estimated that by 2040 up to 37 million tonnes of plastic waste a year will reach the sea and that by 2050 there could be more plastic than fish. That is why the campaign insists on the need to raise awareness of how everyday habits affect seas and oceans.
What Europe Direct is
Europe Direct Córdoba is a European information centre attached to the Delegation of Youth of the Diputación de Córdoba. The activity has been carried out in collaboration with Europe Direct Málaga.
