The Popular Party senator for Córdoba, Cristina Casanueva, has asked the Government of Spain to plan from now on the development of air freight transport (air cargo) at Córdoba Airport, instead of waiting until the end of the 2027-2031 period to address this possibility.

Zero kilos of freight forecast

According to the senator, the Airport Regulation Document (DORA) 2027-2031, already approved for the next regulatory period, envisages for Córdoba Airport a forecast of 0 kilos of freight. In her view, in addition to the necessary investments in runway, apron, security, firefighting or sustainability, Córdoba cannot remain on the sidelines of air cargo planning over the next five years. Casanueva argues that infrastructure planning must anticipate future needs and not be limited to reacting once demand is already consolidated, since otherwise time would be lost that is difficult to recover.

Unanswered questions in the Senate

The senator recalled that the PP raised several questions in the Senate to the Government to find out whether Aena has carried out economic viability and potential demand studies to implement freight infrastructure at the Córdoba airport, whether its potential to operate air cargo has been assessed, whether there are plans to build a cargo module and what measures are envisaged to attract logistics operators. According to Casanueva, the answers received consisted of "passing the buck, just as when we asked about passport control".

The logistics argument

Casanueva has linked this demand to the development of other infrastructures in the province, such as the Army Logistics Base (BLET), the Logistics Area promoted by the Regional Government of Andalusia, the Gran Capitán business park and the El Higuerón freight station. "Córdoba is making progress in logistics. In this context, the airport must also be prepared to be part of that logistics ecosystem," she argued. The senator warned that delaying any study until after 2031 could further lengthen the time needed to analyse alternatives, define actions, process projects and, where appropriate, execute the infrastructures. "Córdoba's logistics future is being built now. This is the moment to study the potential of air cargo and to incorporate the airport into that strategy, not in five years' time," she stated.

Formal request to the Government

The PP of Córdoba calls on the Government of Spain to incorporate the air cargo potential of Córdoba Airport into its planning and to study the infrastructure needs to make it possible, asking that work begin "now" on preparing the necessary conditions so that companies interested in Córdoba find the right conditions.
