Iznájar holds on Friday, October 30 another gathering of lanterns made from melons, an event organised by the town council's Leisure department for All Saints' Day. The activity is open to anyone who wants to take part, and the theme and design of the decoration are freely chosen.

Chocolate and a walk to the castle

The day starts at 17:00 at the headquarters of the Peña Madridista El Biombo with a charity chocolate and snack event organised by the local branch of the Asociación Española Contra el Cáncer (AECC). Anyone who wishes can contribute with a donation, by buying milk or chocolate or bringing some sweet food. The lantern gathering begins at 18:00 with a walk that sets off from the Plaza de Abastos and goes along several streets of the town, ending with a visit to the castle. All participants will receive a gift from the organisers.

Registration until October 29

To take part you must register before October 29 through the registration form.

An autumn tradition

According to the town council, the aim is to keep alive an old custom that consists of hollowing out a melon, carving its skin into different shapes and putting a candle inside to turn it into a lantern. When these dates came around, it was usual to place them on window ledges, hanging from grilles, on door lintels and even next to the niches of some saints, a popular custom linked to the start of autumn.
