The Castillo del Gran Capitán in Montilla will host the 15th edition of the History and Heritage Conference on Friday, November 6, starting at 9:30, dedicated on this occasion to the episodes of the Viceroyalty of New Granada. The event brings together six talks and a guided tour of the Museo del Gran Capitán.

The programme

The first talk will be given by Alfonso García Ferrer Porras, on the defence of Cartagena de Indias by Blas de Lezo and Viceroy Eslava in 1741. Afterwards, Lucía Chacón Ledesma will discuss the Guaraní wars and Carmen Gema González Miaja will speak about the residencia trials in New Granada and the case of Viceroy Solís. After a break, Francisco Montes Tubío will give the talk "De arzobispo a virrey de Santafé. D. Antonio Caballero y Góngora, 1778-1788". The programme will continue with José Antonio Entrenas Angulo, who will address the Camino Real de Tierra Adentro, and Jerónimo Sanz Cabrera, whose talk will be dedicated to the evolution of the fortifications. José Rey García will lead the guided tour of the Museo del Gran Capitán.

What the viceroyalty was

As explained at the presentation, the Viceroyalty of New Granada was created in 1717 by separating territories from the Viceroyalty of Peru, within the administrative changes of the Bourbon dynasty. It covered territories that are today part of Colombia, Venezuela, Panama and Ecuador, as well as the Amazonian province of Mainas. After an interruption it was re-established and its history continued until the independence process.

Registration

Registration is free and compulsory, until all available places are filled, and can be made until Tuesday, November 3 by writing to ir1motuf@uco.es or juradopacoes@gmail.com. The event listing with the venue, time and conditions is available in the InfoCórdoba agenda. The presentation was attended by the Councillor for Culture, Sole Raya, together with Professor Francisco Montes and the official chronicler of Montilla, José Rey. The organisation has the collaboration of the University of Córdoba, the Escuela Técnica Superior de Ingeniería Agronómica y de Montes, the Regulatory Council of the Montilla-Moriles Designation of Origin and the Ayuntamiento.
