The Spanish Association of Wine Cities chose Montilla to hold the capital status in 2027, a recognition that the Regulatory Council of the Montilla-Moriles PDO considers an opportunity to make its wines and its wine tourism known.
Montilla will be the Spanish Wine City during 2027, according to the designation made by the Spanish Association of Wine Cities (ACEVIN) at the meeting of its Board of Directors held on September 30. The Regulatory Council of the Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) Montilla-Moriles has expressed its satisfaction with this choice.
What the capital status entails
According to the Regulatory Council, the distinction places Montilla and the entire PDO at the center of the national wine scene for a year and strengthens the projection of its wines, its heritage and its wine tourism offer. The president of the Regulatory Council, Javier Martín Fernández, has stated that 2027 will be "a unique national showcase of twelve months for the wineries, cooperatives and presses of the D.O.P.".
The body stresses that the recognition is not limited to the city of Montilla, but benefits all the municipalities integrated in the designation of origin. Martín has recalled that "whenever Montilla and its wines are mentioned, it does not refer only to the town but to all the municipalities that make up the PDO".
Wine tourism and promotion
The Regulatory Council expects the capital status to strengthen the visibility of the Montilla-Moriles Wine Route, integrated in the Rutas del Vino de España product club, and to boost initiatives related to wine tourism, gastronomy, training and the dissemination of wine culture.
Among the opportunities expected, the body mentions a greater presence of distributors, sommeliers, gastronomic critics and specialized buyers, as well as a boost to wine tourism visits and experiences linked to the vineyard, the wineries and the presses.
The PDO will also work to show the general public the uniqueness of the Pedro Ximénez grape and the quality of the wines produced in the designation, with the aim of improving its positioning in national and international markets.
Origin of the distinction
The Spanish Wine City distinction was created by ACEVIN in 2023 with the aim of promoting the culture of wine and wine tourism in municipalities with strong ties to the wine sector. Montilla takes over from other cities that have previously held this recognition.
The Regulatory Council has conveyed its congratulations to the Montilla City Council for the work carried out to achieve the designation and has reiterated its willingness to collaborate with the administrations, the wine sector and tourism and cultural agents during 2027.
