The lecture series accompanying the exhibition "Córdoba Romana. La ciudad oculta" got under way this Tuesday with a session devoted to olive oil and its role in supplying Rome. The opening talk was given by José Remesal Rodríguez, professor of Ancient History at the University of Barcelona and director of the excavations at Monte Testaccio, in Rome.

Oil from Baetica as an economic driver

Under the title "El papel de Córdoba y su territorio en el comercio del aceite de oliva a Roma durante los siglos iniciales del Imperio", Remesal explained the weight of the province of Baetica, and in particular of Córdoba, as a centre for producing and exporting oil to the capital of the Empire. The speaker supported his theses with the archaeological work at Monte Testaccio, a mound formed by millions of discarded oil amphorae, which according to the Cabildo Catedral make it possible to gauge the volume of that commercial traffic. The presentation of the session was given by Desiderio Vaquerizo Gil, professor and curator of the exhibition.

A programme to accompany the exhibition

With this series, the Cabildo Catedral de Córdoba links the exhibition to scientific outreach and academic debate on the city's Roman past, according to the institution. The exhibition "Córdoba romana. La ciudad oculta" can be visited in the Sala Vimcorsa between November 20, 2026 and February 7, 2027, according to this portal's archive. It is promoted by the Ayuntamiento de Córdoba with the collaboration of the Universidad de Córdoba and organised in ten thematic rooms on the geography, urban planning and social, political, administrative and economic organisation of the ancient Colonia Patricia.
