The event "Acompañando en el duelo perinatal", organised by the midwives' working group of the Colegio Oficial de Enfermería (COE) de Córdoba, brought together a hundred professionals and families on the afternoon of Thursday, October 15, in the assembly hall of the Hospital San Juan de Dios de Córdoba. The meeting was held on the occasion of World Pregnancy, Perinatal and Neonatal Loss Day, which is commemorated on that same day.

Calls for more training and protocols

The coordinator of the College's midwives' group, María de Prado, stated at the opening, on behalf of the president of COE Córdoba, Natalia Pérez, that the care provided by midwives must be accompanied by resources and measures. In her speech, De Prado said that they will continue to demand that the health administration strengthen specific training in grief, improve care protocols and promote specialised care and follow-up pathways, both in the hospital setting and in primary care. The hospital's director of nursing, Antonio Raya, and the centre's maternity supervisor and director of Comat Matronas, Rosa Llamas, stressed the importance of hospitality and of being with those who suffer, as part of the way of being of the Hermanos de San Juan de Dios.

Professionals from all the hospitals

A round table brought together representatives of all the hospitals in Córdoba, who agreed on the need to keep protocols up to date and staff well trained to accompany these cases. The psychiatrist specialising in perinatal grief, Raquel Jurado, addressed complicated grief and stated that "being sad every day does not mean that the grief is complicated or that it requires medication", as well as stressing that each case must be treated individually. In the testimonies panel, two families and Laura Prados, secretary of Matrioskas, recounted their experience and highlighted the empathy and closeness of the health professionals. The mothers explained that, on arriving home, there is still a long way to go and that having support groups was vital for their recovery. The closing was given by Sonia López, coordinating nurse of the Unidad de Acompañamiento al Duelo of the Hospital San Juan de Dios, who showed a video about the teams working in the province to facilitate grief for families.

What perinatal grief is

The Andalusian rate was 5.06 in 2014 and the national rate was 4.48. The event was held with the collaboration of the Consejo Andaluz de Enfermería (CAE).
