Nearly eighty editors meet at the UCO to discuss AI and open science
The Universidad de Córdoba hosts from this Thursday the IV Encuentro de Profesionales de la Edición Científica y Académica, with panels on standardisation of open access publishing and the use of artificial intelligence in the sector.

Around eighty professionals from university, academic, and scientific publishing houses are taking part, starting this Thursday, in the 4th Meeting of Professionals in Scientific and Academic Publishing at the Universidad de Córdoba (UCO). According to the note released by the UCO, the event has a training-oriented nature and will address the consolidation of open science, the standardization of open-access publishing processes, and the impact of artificial intelligence on publishing activity.
The meeting was opened this morning by the rector, Manuel Torralbo Rodríguez, who gave the institutional welcome to the participants. Torralbo highlighted the role of academic and scientific publishing houses in knowledge transfer and pointed to UCOPress as an example, which this year marks fifty years of existence, created four years after the founding of the Universidad de Córdoba. The rector also mentioned the push given in recent years by Elisa Borsari, general director of Culture and of UCOPress, to professionalize the publishing house.
On behalf of the Ayuntamiento de Córdoba, which has provided Caballerizas Reales for the welcome cocktail, the deputy delegate for Education, Childhood, Cooperation and Solidarity, Narci Ruiz Rodríguez, spoke and referred to Córdoba as a city historically linked to knowledge and the exchange of learning.
Standardization and open publishing
After the opening, a round table was held dedicated to the PEPA project (Plataforma Editorial de Publicaciones en Abierto), focused on advancing toward the standardization of processes in open-access book publishing. It featured publishing managers and metadata experts who addressed aspects such as interoperability, presence in databases, indexing, and the application of international standards to improve the visibility of academic publications. Speakers included Jaume Llambrich, from Publicacions URV; Manuel Minchón, from Editorial UHU; Luis Montilla, from Crossref; and Reme Pérez, vice president of the Unión de Editoriales Universitarias Españolas (UNE) and director of Editorial UPV.
Artificial intelligence in the publishing process
Afterwards, Daniel Benchimol, director of Proyecto451, presented practical applications of artificial intelligence already implemented in publishing processes, showing how these tools can optimize content management, editing, and metadata tasks. The session was moderated by Isaac Caselles, director of Editorial Universidad Francisco de Vitoria and training board member of UNE.
The vice president of UNE, Remedios Pérez García, raised during her talk the need to review whether publishing models still make sense given the arrival of new tools that influence editorial processes and the way quality, rigor, and trust are conveyed. Pérez García also made a call to academic and scientific institutions to combat the precariousness affecting many of these publishing houses, according to the UCO note.
