The Mosque-Cathedral will host on Wednesday, November 11 the II International Conference The Harmony of Sustainability, a meeting to analyse the challenges of sustainable management of cultural heritage and to share experiences between institutions. It will be held at the monument's Information and Reception Centre (CIR) from 09:15 and can be followed in person or online, with streaming in Spanish and English.
The event is open to anyone who wishes to attend, both at the CIR and online through the Mosque-Cathedral's YouTube channel. Information and registration are available on the website mezquita-catedraldecordoba.es.
From human development to the circular economy
The programme will be moderated by the Vice-Rector for Sustainable Campus of the University of Córdoba, Amanda Penélope García Marín. María Dolores Sánchez Galera, from the Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development of the Holy See, will open the session, speaking about integral human development and shared responsibility towards the future. Afterwards, the dean-president of the Cabildo Catedral, Joaquín Alberto Nieva García, will present the monument's strategy, governance and institutional commitment to sustainability.
A dialogue panel on the sustainable management of World Heritage sites will feature the president of ICOMOS España, Juan Carlos Molina Gaitán; professor Blanca del Espino Hidalgo of the University of Seville, and the Director of Social Impact at Forética, Ricardo Trujillo Fernández. The meeting will also address climate neutrality and the efficient use of resources, with representatives from the Ayuntamiento de Córdoba, Greening Consulting and the University of Córdoba. A panel on the circular economy and waste management with specialists from Global Zero Waste, OCA Global and Innoune Consulting will close the event.
A report with a falling carbon footprint
The meeting is part of the Cabildo's sustainability strategy, which presented its second Sustainability Report, corresponding to 2025, with the technical support of the University of Córdoba and the Fundación CUCO Club de Córdoba para la UNESCO. The document records a 15.4% reduction in the monument's carbon footprint during 2025, along with actions in conservation, security, accessibility, research and social action. According to canon Joaquín Pérez, «sustainability cannot be understood solely from an environmental perspective, but must be part of all decisions related to heritage conservation, care for people and our relationship with society».
The conference is organised by the Cabildo Catedral de Córdoba with the collaboration of the University of Córdoba, the Ayuntamiento de Córdoba and the Fundación CUCO Club de Córdoba para la UNESCO, and is sponsored by UNESCO.
