The Cabildo of the Mosque-Cathedral of Córdoba has reached the Gold category of the Zero Waste certification, an international distinction that assesses waste management. According to the Diocese of Córdoba, with this recognition the monument becomes the first property declared a World Heritage Site in Spain to obtain this certification.

What the distinction means

The Zero Waste certification accredits the Cabildo's work in reducing and managing the waste generated by the monument. The Diocese states that the Cabildo has reached the Gold level, the highest category of this international distinction.

A building with history

The Mosque-Cathedral is the cathedral of the diocese of Córdoba and the most visited building in the city. According to Islamic sources, the basilica of San Vicente previously stood on the site, and excavations indicate the existence of a 5th-century episcopal complex. Abderramán I founded the congregational mosque at the end of his life, in 786, and the building was subject to extensions during the emirate and the Caliphate, until its conversion into a cathedral after the Christian conquest.

The monument, under works these days

This recognition comes while the Cathedral Cabildo works on the conservation of the building. This portal reported on October 21, 2026 that the technical team had replaced the shaft and capital of the column damaged in the August 2025 fire, an operation carried out at six in the morning, before the monument opened to visitors. The intervention was part of the restoration project approved by the Territorial Delegation of Culture of the Junta in Córdoba.

Promotion of heritage

The Diocese has also announced these days the publication of the book «La Mezquita-Catedral de Córdoba. Una creación artística única», which, according to the Diocese, summarizes the care, conservation and effort dedicated to the main temple of the diocese.
