Reina Sofía University Hospital and IMIBIC have held the first Research Conference for Residents, with more than 100 registered, so that specialists in training incorporate research into their work from the start.
The Reina Sofía University Hospital and the Maimónides Institute for Biomedical Research of Córdoba (IMIBIC) have held the first Research Conference for Residents, aimed at specialists in training, that is, at those completing their residency at the hospital. The event has exceeded 100 registrants and has taken place at the IMIBIC facilities under the motto "Research during residency: opportunities and first steps".
What has been addressed
The programme has focused on how to move from clinical practice to a scientific project. The morning sessions have dealt with the reasons for researching during residency, how to transform a problem detected in the consultation, the on-call shift or patient care into a study and what resources are available to start. The specialists Juan Luis Romero Cabrera and Cristian Rodelo-Haad have spoken with presentations on the value of research at this stage and on the first steps to design a study. A round table on the IMIBIC has presented its research lines and groups and the collaboration opportunities for residents of different specialties.
Resources and research career
The conference has also included sessions on methodological, biostatistical and documentary support, guidance from tutors and ethics committees, and the procedures for innovation, intellectual property and patents. In the afternoon, the programme has addressed the start of the doctoral thesis, the possibilities of developing a research and teaching career and the professional opportunities of biomedical research, as well as a practical session to contact research groups and join their projects.
A hospital with 500 clinical trials
According to the hospital, the centre currently has about 500 clinical trials, which broadens the opportunities for patients to access new therapeutic alternatives. The managing director of the Reina Sofía, Francisco Triviño, has stated at the opening that "you residents are not only the future of the Reina Sofía Hospital. You are also a very important part of our present". The scientific director of the IMIBIC, Pablo Pérez Martínez, and representatives of specialised training and research of the health complex have also taken part in the inauguration. The initiative is part of the activities of the hospital's 50th anniversary.
What it is for
The aim, according to its organisers, is to bring research closer to specialists in training, awaken scientific vocations and facilitate their first steps in the development of projects, taking into account the demands of a stage marked by healthcare activity, on-call shifts and continuous learning.
