The Diocese of Córdoba celebrates this Sunday, October 18, the centenary of World Mission Sunday (Domund), a day that the Church dedicates to prayer and financial cooperation with the mission territories. The bishop of Córdoba, Jesús Fernández, presides at the mass in the Cathedral at twelve noon.
One hundred years of campaign
The day was instituted in 1926, when Pope Pius XI created it to unite the whole Church with the work of the missionaries. This year the campaign carries the motto "One in Christ, united in mission". According to the data provided by the diocese, in this century the mission territories have multiplied by four and the missionaries currently work in 1,133 territories, nearly a third of the dioceses of the world.
The diocese puts at 542,356 euros the Córdoba contribution to the campaigns of the Pontifical Mission Societies (OMP) during 2025, within a total of 714,428.21 euros contributed that year. In addition, 186 missionaries from Córdoba carry out their work in different places around the world.
The Pope's message
Pope Leo XIV has sent a message in which he invites people to join the day and recalls his experience as a missionary in Peru. "Your prayers and your concrete support will be of great help in bringing the Gospel of the Love of God to all, especially to the poorest and to those who need it most," he states.
The bishop of Córdoba has stressed, according to the diocese, that every Christian is called by Baptism to proclaim the Good News and to participate in the evangelizing mission of the Church, both through prayer and through financial help.
