The Cofradía de la Amargura y Antigua de Aguilar de la Frontera has closed the events of its founding centenary with a mass in the parish of Santa María del Soterraño, held on Saturday, October 17 and presided over by the bishop of Córdoba, Jesús Fernández. The celebration commemorated one hundred years of history and devotion of the dolorosa of Good Friday.

Thanks and congratulations

During the homily, the bishop expressed his gratitude to God for the path traveled by the corporation throughout this century and stressed the role of the Virgin Mary as a mother who welcomes, consoles and accompanies. He invited those present to remember the pleas, sorrows and moments of loneliness that will have found consolation under her protection. Fernández congratulated the brotherhood for these one hundred years of caring for its titular images, of promoting Marian devotion and of attention both to its brothers and to the whole Christian community of Aguilar de la Frontera.

A reflection on the Gospel

The prelate delved into the Gospel and the words of Jesus «Give to Caesar what is Caesar's and to God what is God's». He invited the faithful to understand this teaching from the condition of the human being as the image of God, called to recognize him as his only Lord. As he explained, this reflection «does not exempt Christians from their civic and professional responsibilities, but commits them to work for the construction of a more just, free, supportive, fraternal and peaceful society, guided by the Gospel and the Social Doctrine of the Church». The celebration served to give thanks for the one hundred years of history of the Hermandad de Nuestra Señora de la Amargura y Nuestra Señora de la Antigua, to renew devotion to its titular images and to reaffirm its commitment to the life of the Church and evangelization, according to the Diócesis de Córdoba.
