The Bishop of Córdoba, Monsignor Jesús Fernández, took part this Monday, October 12, in the events organized by the Guardia Civil on the occasion of the feast of its patron saint, Nuestra Señora del Pilar.

Events in La Victoria and at the Cathedral

The prelate attended the events held at the La Victoria barracks, in Córdoba, and afterwards presided over the celebration of the Eucharist in the Santa Iglesia Catedral. During the homily he took the figure of the Virgin Mary as an example of «strength, motherhood and discipleship».

Thanks to the security forces

In his address, the bishop expressly thanked the Guardia Civil for its work. «We give thanks to God for all the state security forces, because they give us security and society needs this along with more serenity, normality and calm,» he said. Fernández presented Mary as a «firm rock» in the face of the insecurities of today's world and stated that society «needs the generosity, security and confidence that Mary gives us».

Mary as mother and disciple

The bishop described Mary as the mother of all believers, capable of accompanying the disciples «in their moments of disorientation», and invited the faithful to «recognize the other as a brother», promoting the common good and respect for the dignity of each person. He also recalled the tradition that links the apparition of the Virgen del Pilar to the apostle Santiago in Zaragoza with the origins of evangelization in Spain and its expansion throughout Spanish America, a tradition placed at the origin of the celebration of Día de la Hispanidad. He closed his homily by urging people to turn to Mary to fulfill the mission of proclaiming Jesus Christ and bringing his message to the world.
