The Cabildo replaces the damaged column in the Mezquita-Catedral fire

The technical team of the Cathedral Cabildo has replaced the shaft and capital of the column that was damaged in the August 2025 fire, an operation carried out at six in the morning, before the monument opened to visitors.

The Cathedral Chapter has completed the replacement of the column of the Mosque-Cathedral that was damaged in the August 2025 fire. The work consisted of replacing the affected elements, the shaft and the capital, which had reached their load limit due to the damage suffered.

Work before opening

The work was carried out at six in the morning, before the start of visiting hours, to combine the construction work with the monument's usual activity and not interfere with public visits. According to the Chapter, the work required specific planning and complex execution due to the characteristics of the building and the need to act with guarantees. The replacement is part of the restoration project approved by the Regional Culture Delegation of the Junta in Córdoba. The Chapter states that with this work it continues to advance in the tasks to address the consequences of the fire and preserve the integrity of the monument.

Other works after the fire

This is not the first intervention the Chapter has announced this autumn. On September 11 it reported the reopening of the Chapel of the Holy Spirit after completing its full restoration following the previous year's fire, with which the space returned to the monument's cultural itinerary. A few days earlier, on September 9, the Andalusian Council of Official Colleges of Architects granted the Chapter the "Architects of Andalusia 2026" Distinction, in the category of Defense of Andalusian Heritage, for the intervention carried out after the fire of August 8, 2025. The Chapter states that it maintains its commitment to the conservation of the Mosque-Cathedral through specialized intervention and the adoption of the necessary measures for its preservation.
