The Hermandad de Nuestro Padre Jesús Nazareno y María Santísima de los Dolores de Montilla commemorates the centenary of the incorporation of the Santísimo Cristo de la Yedra into its Good Friday procession. The programme of events runs from Friday, October 23 to Sunday, November 1 and revolves around the history of this devotion and the image's link with the nazarene brotherhood since 1926.

An extraordinary departure through the centre

The central moment will be on Saturday, October 24, when the Cristo de la Yedra leads an extraordinary departure from the church of San Agustín. The procession will set off at 19:00 and will pass through the streets Ancha, Fuente Álamo, El Horno, Puerta de Aguilar, Plazuela de la Inmaculada, Escuelas, San Juan de Ávila, Plaza de la Rosa, Corredera, Santa Ana and San Francisco Solano, to return along calle Ancha to its church at around 22:00.

Lectures, round table and besapiés

The programme opens on Friday, October 23, at 21:00 with the lecture «El Cristo de la Yedra en San Agustín. Circunstancias de un retablo», by Rafael Portero de la Torre, graduate in Fine Arts and conservator-restorer of cultural heritage. Thursday, October 29 is dedicated to school visits, with the aim of bringing the history and the heritage and devotional significance of the crucifix closer to pupils. On Friday, October 30, at 21:00, the round table «El Cristo de la Yedra, un siglo tras la Cruz Nazarena» will be held, moderated by Rafael Raigón Luque. The faithful will be able to venerate the image at the besapiés planned for Friday, October 30, from 19:00 to 21:00, and Saturday 31, from 18:00 to 21:00.

Closing with a solemn mass

The centenary will conclude on Sunday, November 1 with a religious service in honour of the Santísimo Cristo de la Yedra at 12:00. The sermon will be given by José Juan Jiménez Güeto, diocesan delegate for Brotherhoods and Confraternities, and will feature musical accompaniment by the Coral Montillana de Don Bosco.

A devotion prior to 1926

The image is a Renaissance crucifix of anonymous authorship that is venerated in the church of San Agustín in Montilla and whose history is linked to the former Colegio de los Jesuitas. In 1672 the Congregación del Espíritu Santo was founded there, which took it as its titular image, and in 1749 the congregation opened a women's branch whose titular image was a Nuestra Señora de los Dolores. The expulsion of the Jesuits in 1767 led to the disappearance of the congregation and the distribution of its assets. The Virgen de los Dolores was moved in 1772 to the convent of Santa Ana, where it is still venerated, and the Cristo de la Yedra passed in 1774 to the parish of Santiago and, in 1810, to the church of San Agustín, its current seat.
