Fuente-Tójar reinforces mud cleanup after the flood that affected three homes
The Fuente-Tójar Town Council has hired machinery and staff from a local company to remove mud from the A-3225 road through the town and the Plaza de la Fuente after the rains on Saturday, October 17, which caused no personal injuries.
The rains on Saturday, October 17 caused runoff and accumulations of mud at several points in Fuente-Tójar. According to the assessment relayed by the mayor, Mari Fe Muñoz, there were no personal injuries and the main material damage is concentrated in three homes and in the Museo Histórico Municipal, located in a ground-floor unit that was flooded. Water also entered the storeroom of the kiosk in the Plaza de la Fuente and the courtyard of the Residencia de Mayores.
Three houses and the museum
The three homes with the greatest damage are in the area around the Plaza de la Fuente and the lower part of the municipality, where the water affected furniture, doors and other items. The checks found no damage at the cemetery, the sports centre or the school. The firefighters intervened on Saturday afternoon in the courtyard of the Residencia de Mayores, where a blocked drain had accumulated water, and prevented it from reaching the interior of the centre. The mayor and the councillor M. Carmen Leiva toured the affected areas on Sunday.
Cleaning of the road through the town
The flood left mud along the A-3225 road through the town and in the Plaza de la Fuente. Given the lack of cleaning resources from the regional administration during Sunday and Monday, the Town Council exceptionally hired a local company, with machinery and support staff, to reinforce the municipal work of removing debris for two days. Muñoz explained that the road through the town is owned by the Junta de Andalucía and thanked the work of the municipal workers, the firefighters and those who helped with the cleaning.
Response to criticism
The mayor has defended investments in water infrastructure and has stated that "more than 90% of the supply and sewer network has been renewed". According to the information relayed by the Mayor's Office, the episode left more than 90 litres per square metre in barely half an hour. In response to criticism from the VOX municipal group, Muñoz has denied that the Town Council refused to lend cleaning machinery to residents: "It is absolutely false that we have denied our help to anyone, since we have not received any request for collaboration to provide cleaning machinery". The mayor has questioned the political use of the storm and has insisted that the Government team's priority is to complete the cleaning and the monitoring of the damage detected.
