More than fifty people have taken part in the first Provincial Meeting of the Futuro Singular Córdoba Easy Reading Clubs, held at the Grupo Cántico Provincial Public Library. The event brought together the seven clubs that the organisation has spread across different municipalities in the province and coincided with International Library Day.

Eight years bringing reading closer

The Futuro Singular Córdoba Easy Reading Club began eight years ago with the aim of bringing reading closer to people with intellectual disabilities through books adapted in Easy Reading. It currently has 53 readers, accompanied by eight support people who serve the seven groups. The library has collaborated with the organisation since 2018 and offers books adapted in Easy Reading, as well as facilitating access to reading for all people. According to Futuro Singular Córdoba, the meeting arose from a proposal by the participants themselves, who wanted to meet the other clubs, talk about the books they had read and spend a day together.

Each group presented its book

During the day, each club presented a book and explained why it recommends it. Afterwards, those attending answered the question "What does reading and being part of the Easy Reading Club mean to you?". According to what they said, reading helps them to learn and relax, to understand texts better, to learn new words and to imagine stories, and the club allows them to meet other people, make friendships and share an activity. At the end, the group met at the Mercado de la Victoria to continue talking and prepare ideas for the second Provincial Meeting, which the organisation expects within two years and which will coincide with the club's tenth anniversary.

What Easy Reading is

Easy Reading is a format that adapts texts so that they are understandable to people with reading difficulties, with short sentences and simple vocabulary. Futuro Singular Córdoba notes that this activity contributes to Sustainable Development Goals 4 (quality education), 10 (reduced inequalities), 11 (sustainable cities and communities) and 17 (partnerships for the goals).
