The universities of Spain and Chile have sealed a commitment to collaboration. The president of the Conference of Rectors of Spanish Universities (CRUE), Julián Garde López-Brea, and the executive vice-president of the Council of Rectors of Chilean Universities (CRUCH), Osvaldo Corrales Jorquera, signed on Tuesday, October 20 the joint declaration of the II Meeting of Rectors Spain Chile, according to the University of Córdoba.

Cooperating in the face of uncertainty

The signed text sets out the commitment of both institutions. Its conclusions state that «in a time of uncertainty, the universities of Chile and Spain choose to cooperate», and that «in the face of the fragmentation of knowledge, they choose to share capabilities; in the face of global challenges, they choose to build common responses». The declaration was read by the rector of the University of Valparaíso and the rector of the University of León, Nuria González Álvarez. The closing ceremony was also attended by the rector of the University of La Laguna (ULL), Francisco Javier García Rodríguez, the host institution, and the alternate executive vice-president of CRUCH and rector of the Catholic University, Marcela Momberg Alarcón.

Next appointment in Chile

During the closing, the holding of a third summit in Chile in 2028 was announced. Garde highlighted the quality of the panels and presentations, which in his view set a clear horizon: addressing training activity, sharing capabilities and preserving the mission of the university. The president of CRUE thanked the University of La Laguna for hosting the meeting within Campus América 2026 and CRUCH for its «invaluable and structural collaboration». For his part, the rector of La Laguna stressed that it is good not to scatter efforts and «to focus on the areas with the most potential», and added that Spain and Chile «have a great many» that «must continue to be strengthened».
