The Palacio de la Merced in Córdoba hosts the II Iberian Olive Growing Congress from this Tuesday, October 20, until October 23, held under the motto "Olive growing in a context of global change: Innovation, Sustainability and Territory". The meeting is co-organized by the Asociación Portuguesa de Horticultura (APH), the Sociedad Española de Ciencias Hortícolas (SECH), the Instituto de Agricultura Sostenible (CSIC), the Instituto Andaluz de Investigación y Formación en Producción Agraria, Pesquera, Alimentaria y Ecológica (IFAPA) and the Universidad de Córdoba (UCO).
A program focused on the challenges of the olive grove
The congress aims to present the scientific and technological advances that can help address the sector's challenges and to discuss solutions so that the olive grove and extra virgin olive oil of the Iberian Peninsula gain resilience, competitiveness and sustainability, according to the meeting's program. Among the thematic areas analyzed are genetic resources, cultivation techniques, circular economy, remote sensing, artificial intelligence and new technologies.
The delegate of Infraestructuras, Sostenibilidad y Agricultura of the Diputación de Córdoba, Andrés Lorite, has stated that holding the congress at the Palacio de la Merced places the province "at the center of the world of olive growing and elaiotechnics".
The weight of the olive grove in the province
Lorite has highlighted that the olive grove is the predominant crop in Córdoba, with more than 376,000 hectares and presence in all municipalities. Baena is the municipality with the largest registered area, with more than 28,800 hectares, while Conquista is the one with the least, with barely 6 hectares.
According to the 2025 data cited by the delegate, Córdoba is the Andalusian province with the largest area of organic farming, with 258,408 hectares out of the 1,422,045 registered in Andalusia. Organic olive groves total 42,470 hectares in the province, more than 30% of the Andalusian total, which exceeds 133,000 hectares.
The delegate has also stressed the quality of Córdoba's extra virgin olive oils, with more than 190 oil mill industries and four Protected Designations of Origin (PDO), and has emphasized the social and economic impact of the crop, which he considers a tool for job creation and social cohesion in the province.
