The Teatro Liceo de Baena hosts on Saturday, October 31, at 20:00, the performance of «¡Ay, Carmela!», José Sanchís Sinisterra's classic, by the company Teatro Benavente. Admission is free until full capacity is reached.

How to get the invitations

Invitations can be collected at the Museo Histórico and at the Museo del Aceite de Baena. Access is thus open to anyone who wants to come to the theatre, at no cost, until the hall's capacity is filled.

A play about memory and freedom

According to the councillor for Culture, Ana Cruz, the play «combines emotion, humour and tragedy to bring us closer to one of the most difficult periods of our history». The plot follows Carmela and Paulino, two variety artists caught up in the circumstances of the Civil War, and addresses, in the councillor's words, «freedom, dignity, memory and the power of theatre as a form of expression and resistance». Cruz adds that it is «a story that makes us laugh, moves us and makes us reflect» and that, despite being set in a specific moment of history, it continues to raise current questions about freedom, conscience and the human condition.

The municipality's cultural programme

The councillor notes that having Teatro Benavente to bring this classic to Baena is a new opportunity to enjoy theatre in the town and to continue expanding the cultural programme offered to residents. The Ayuntamiento maintains that culture «should not be a luxury, but a right» and that access to the arts helps foster critical thinking and create spaces for meeting and coexistence.
