The Mosque-Cathedral of Córdoba now holds the international Zero Waste certification in its Gold category, which accredits a waste management system based on reduction, recovery and recycling. According to the Cathedral Cabildo, an external audit has confirmed a real recycling rate of 87.3%.
What changes with the distinction
The recognition is granted by OCA Instituto de Certificación and, according to the chapter institution, makes the Córdoba monument the first asset declared a World Heritage Site in Spain to obtain this certification. The Cabildo maintains that the distinction places the Mosque-Cathedral as a reference in the application of environmental sustainability criteria to the management of historical heritage.
The project has had the collaboration of Global Zero Waste, Innoune Group and OCA Global. It began to be developed in 2025 and has allowed the introduction of new procedures for the control and monitoring of waste associated with the monument's activity.
Three international certifications
The Zero Waste certification is added to the ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 certifications, which the Cabildo obtained last June and which accredit, respectively, its quality and environmental management systems. Both cover the main activities of the Mosque-Cathedral, from the maintenance and conservation of its infrastructures to the organization of worship, tourist visits and customer service.
ISO 9001 recognizes a management system aimed at guaranteeing the quality of processes and services, their evaluation and continuous improvement. ISO 14001 accredits an environmental management system that allows identifying and controlling the impacts associated with the activity and promoting responsible use of resources.
The Cabildo's assessment
The dean-president of the Cathedral Cabildo, Joaquín Alberto Nieva García, has stated that these three certifications represent «a very important step» in its management model and has stressed that they are not only commitments, but «procedures and results voluntarily submitted to the evaluation of external and independent bodies». Nieva has added that the recognitions reinforce the institution's commitment to transparency and collaboration with Córdoba society.
