The regulatory councils of the protected designations of origin and protected geographical indications for Andalusian wine have expressed their support for the approval, by the Governing Council of the Junta de Andalucía, of the formulation of the Strategy for Vineyards and Wine of Andalusia 2028-2031. Among the signatory bodies is the Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) Montilla-Moriles.

A roadmap for the sector

According to the regulatory councils, the strategy will provide the Andalusian wine sector with a consensual roadmap to face the challenges of the coming decades. The document will address in a coordinated manner issues such as the economic sustainability of holdings, adaptation to climate change, technological innovation, digitalisation, generational renewal, promotion, the opening of new markets and improving the competitiveness of companies. The designations of origin state that the process is born with a participatory vocation and will incorporate the experience of all agents in the value chain, from winegrowers to wineries, cooperatives, marketers and certification bodies.

Collaboration with the Junta

The regulatory councils express their willingness to collaborate with the Regional Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Rural Development during the drafting phases of the document, contributing their experience in the management and defence of differentiated quality figures. The Andalusian wine sector, according to the signatory bodies, constitutes an essential economic activity for numerous rural districts, due to its contribution to employment, the maintenance of unique landscapes and the retention of population in the territory.
