The Cofradía de Nuestra Señora de la Estrella Coronada de Villa del Río celebrates this Saturday, October 10, the central day of the events for its 450th anniversary, as reported by the town council. The image will be exposed for the veneration of the faithful in the Parroquia de la Inmaculada Concepción between 10:00 and 13:00 hours.

Schedule of the day

At 12:00 hours the Angelus is prayed and at 12:15 the Holy Rosary. In the afternoon, at 17:00, the sacred image is transferred from the parish to the Plaza de la Constitución, where at 18:00 a religious service presided over by the bishop of Córdoba, Jesús Fernández González, is held. Next comes the traditional ascent of the Virgin to her sanctuary, accompanied by the Banda de Música Puente Romano.

A lecture on the origins

These events come after the Salón de Plenos of the town council hosted on the afternoon of Friday, October 9 the lecture «Fundación de la Cofradía de la Virgen de la Estrella (1576): contexto y curiosidades», by the official chronicler of Villa del Río, Salomé Sánchez Collado. It reviewed the process of approval of the brotherhood's first rules, between 1571 and 1577, during the episcopal mandate of Fray Bernardo de Fresneda, bishop of Córdoba. The lecture placed the foundation in a population of about 784 inhabitants in 1591 and addressed the relationship between the brotherhood and that of San Roque, with a 50 % sharing of funds, as well as the devotion to Santa Ana and the historical link with Bujalance, where the tradition of the finding of the image comes from. The sculptor Juan Martínez Cerrillo, author of the current image, made in 1940, was also remembered.

Acknowledgements

The Culture and Festivities areas of the town council have thanked the official chronicler for her research and dissemination work, and the brotherhood, presided over by Isabel Pérez Aguilar, for the organization of the events.
