A town with a wine-growing tradition
Moriles is a town in the Cordoba countryside located about 65 kilometres from the capital and with just over 3,700 inhabitants, according to 2020 data. Its wineries are among its main points of interest, along with the parish church of San Jerónimo.
The town gives its name, together with Montilla, to the Montilla-Moriles designation of origin, which covers the ageing and marketing of wines produced in Moriles and in other localities of the province of Córdoba, such as Aguilar de la Frontera, Montilla, Doña Mencía, Montalbán de Córdoba, Monturque, Nueva Carteya and Puente Genil, as well as part of Baena, Cabra, Castro del Río, Espejo, Fernán Núñez, La Rambla, Lucena, Montemayor and Santaella.
Fortified wines under a veil of flor
The wines of this area are made with different varieties of white grape and are aged under a veil of flor using the criaderas and soleras system. Depending on their maturation, they give rise to young, fino, amontillado and oloroso wines, which darken in tone until they become fortified wines, with a maximum alcohol content of about 20 degrees. The Montilla-Moriles area is also the origin of sweet wine.
